False Black Widow - Steatoda grossa

One morning as I looked out the window and saw a deer resting on the grass that was planted over the large root cellar. I decided I would check out what kind of bugs I would find in this underground storage space. When I went inside and found this spider I knew it was something I had never seen before. It's eyes were kind of spooky and glowing. It turned out to be my first False Black Widow spider.

Noctua pronuba - Large Yellow Underwing - Hodges#11003.1

The Large Yellow Underwing is an introduced species from Europe that fly from June to October. I photographed this one in mid September it shows how worn they can become.

Hobo Spider - Tegenaria agrestis

I was lucky enough to find both a female and male of this species.  I found the female with her herringbone pattern at an old compost bin that was down by the lake.  She was guarding her egg sac which always incorporates soil or other matter in between the silk.  The male I found in the kitchen.  This species gets a bad rap as being aggressive, but it would rather retreat and hide.

Copper Underwing - Amphipyra pyramidoides - Hodges#9638

I was lucky enough to find a couple of Copper Underwings, both at different stages. The photos show a good comparison of both a fresh and a worn moth.

Dart Moth - Sunira decipiens - Hodges#9958

Porch lights never let me down. On most mornings when I checked to see what was out there, I usually found a few different species. This one was near the front entrance.

Another gem that I found one morning by the porch light.

Sinuous Bee Fly - Hemipenthes sinuosa

I wish this guy would have stuck around for a few more pics before it flew off.  It is a new species for me.

Grass Spiders - Agelenopsis

Grass spiders are very common throughout Canada, so it was no surprise to find this one. Since they are docile I was able to get a few pics.

Huckleberry Grasshopper - Melanoplus fasciatus

This grasshopper was up in the Fylton Forest by one of the paths. I was lucky enough to get a picture before it jumped away.

Running Crab Spider - Apollophanes margareta

I was very happy to find this spider as it was one I hadn`t seen before. Plus it was very cooperative for the pics. Most of the time they use those long legs to head off in the opposite direction. This one was on the east side of the barn.

Bark Crab Spider - Bassaniana

One spot where I knew I would find bugs was up at the compost bin. Thats where I found this little guy, but I only got the one photo before he hid on me.

Ground Spider - Micaria rossica

We were having tea at the picnic table one afternoon when B spotted this spider. I hadn't seen one before with rings on it's abdomen and it's first three femurs red and the fourth black. A nice addition to my photo collection.

Cluster fly - Pollenia

I only managed to get one photo of this fly before it decided to leave. I found this one by the bush close to the lake.

Geometrid Moth - Larentiinae

I love how some moths have great camo and know how to use it. From a distance this one blended in beautifully.
